I bought two GMS8 half mirror spheres from Amazon for about $16 each. They are very lightly magnetic and intended for the garden which I think implies a 300 series stainless. Formed by a combination of drawing and spinning the shell thickness varies from 0.015” to 0.020” and while not a perfect half sphere it is close. Two will form a liner protecting my glass bell jar interior from damage plus a bit of X-ray shielding for me. They weight 222 grams each.

They seem OK.

Re: Stainless 8” Bell Jar liner
Very nice.
I wonder if they could withstand internal vacuum with any strength margin.
A few years ago I got a pair of 6" aluminum hemispheres for under $10, to make an optical integrating sphere.
Found them sold as "sports ball cake pans", under the Wilton brand, at a craft store. (also see ebay) Please be careful.

Richard they are better quality from China than I was expecting. I need to machine a few holes in one of the half spheres before I can get into the neutron business but measurable progress continues.
Rich I wondered about the crush strength as well.
This link would probably be a good for an order of magnitude approximation, and these certainly would make an inexpensive chamber if they can take a vacuum.

You’d really need to get the answer from a CAD Finite Element Analysis program, and simulate a small surface indentation to make me happy. When I load the surface with my thumbs I can’t oil can it or see any surface deflection. So superficially the answer appears yes.

Wonder how many knew that last photo was a recreation of the post war "tickling the tail" accident....
