Every fusor and fusion system seems to need a vacuum. This area is for detailed discussion of vacuum systems, materials, gauging, etc. related to fusor or fusion research.

Alcatel Vacuum Pump Teardown

Post by Erik smith »

I have an Alcatel 2002BB vacuum pump that I bought online last year. I quickly found out, after deadheading it with a TC vacuum gauge that it only pulls a vacuum of 2 Torr! I decided to open the pump and look around for what could possibly be the source of this horrible vacuum. However, I did not find anything visibly wrong with the pump. the internals look very clean and free of large scratches. The vanes and gaskets seem to be in good condition as well. Looking for advice on what may be a potential problem before I drop $160 on a minor repair kit form Idealvac.

Now that you have taken it apart you kinda have to put a kit in. Usually the seals are good for one use. It probably just needs a kit.

most of these direct drive pumps eventually wear out their shaft seals (Fla)
So at a very minimum you need to replace these
