Re: Happy birthday, neon signs
Yes, while colorful discharge tubes were old news by the time of his patent, real bright tubes using neon had to wait for early 20th century advances in cryogenics needed to condense out the rarer atmospheric gases and make them avaialble in usable amounts.
The neon signage craze took off like gang busters, reaching its peak in the late 50's and early 60's. However, in the "critical of everything" 70's, the harsh neon glow was considered ugly and unsightly; a relic of a bygone age. However, the neon discharge tube has undergone a recent resurgence as an art form, much as women's fashion comes, goes, and then returns anew.
The pretty, rich, blue clear glass discharge tubes are among the most beautiful, but have nice big blobs of mercury rolling around in them as do virtually 100% of all phosphor coated discharge signage that create colors other than neon red.
