SAFETY FIRST !!

Post by Richard Hull »

This old railroadman's motto is good advice for all who would work with a fusor.

Fusor's all require high voltage at moderate to high currents inorder to function. At any voltage, current is the determining factor for, and proportional, to the amount of ionization and, ultimately, fusion.

The voltages and currents required to operate even the most modest fusor demo system are quite lethal.

Death by electrocution is a real concern when working with any accelerating device. This is not only a hazard to the operator, but curious observers are at risk as well. Therefore, precautions must be taken to keep high voltages secure from casual or accidental contact by anyone coming near the device.

Safety interlocks, key switch operation, remote disconnect fail-safes are almost demanded.

The high voltages needed for larger fusors can arc over many inches from the conductor. The current associated with a big fusor supply can start fires if arcs occur near any flammable material.

The key word here is vigilance.

It is all too easy to fall into the feeling that the HV line to the fusor is just a simple power line and become careless in servicing or assembling the device.

Rest assured, there will be no second chance here.
If you get shocked by a main fusor supply, it may not be your first, but it will most likely be your last.

The above being said and exercising proper caution and due respect, high voltage is much like a firearm, high explosives or a motor vehicle..... Potentially dangerous, but safe enough in trained hands.

Stupidity is a capital offense, indeed!

Only one sentence...... DEATH....by electrocution!
