ECR Ion Source - pictures and construction details ...

Hi!
Philipp + Werner visited the Plasma Physics Institute at the University in Vienna. We were looking at an experiment based on an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source. They call it SOPHIE – as to be seen on the SCADA screenshot. Interesting to me was the ion source as it could be modified to use deuterium too. In the attached paper there is a detailed description of the components and amplifiers used to generate the plasma. Some very nice ideas, like placing the PTFE window between the RF source and the waveguide inside the plasma chamber at an angle of 90° - this avoids metal sputtering!
Please see the paper with the construction sketch: http://www.iap.tuwien.ac.at/www/_media/ ... iption.pdf
Big thanks to Florian and Elisabeth who showed us around and explained every question we asked – regardless of the depth of technical details!
