Hi Guys,

After the recent success I have had with my FICS reactor I have a suggestion as to how the regular tea kettle fusor can be made more efficient, with a minimum amount of change.

Simply adding a second feedthrough to a steel ball inside the grid and maintaining it at a potential a few kV higher than the grid, it should be possible to light a plasma inside the grid, and create a stream of electrons going inwards. This could be done with two power supplies or with a big zener diode as in my current FICS setup.

If it works the way I expect it will, very few ions will hit the grid, and it won't get hot, electrons won't leak to the shell so the shell won't get hot either. The steel ball on the second grid will only get hit with 5kV electrons so it won't take much heat either.

The only real current used is the differential between the two grids which should send the Q sky high.

Bonus Energy:
The fusion ash being alpha particles and protons will fly radially outwards and hit the shell, thereby carrying positive charges from the grid to the ground, this is effectively contributing to the input power of your fusor or FICS (Fusion Induced Charge Separation)

It's got to be a win, win..

Humm, I could try this without too much effort, as I could just tap further down on my CW multiplier to get the lower voltage.
The more reactive the materials, the more spectacular the failures.
The testing isn't over until the prototype is destroyed.

That sounds like boot strapping, how can you get a current to flow between two taps on a CW multiplier?

I explained how we do this at work when you visited.
We use the transil type unipolar 400V diodes to get what you want for electron suppression. Use as many as needed 400volt diodes in seriesgood for about 10mA continuous in air or 1 mA in vacuum
These diodes are extemely good in the reverse leakage direction 1 x 10^ -11 A and commonly self bias works very well including seting the anode cathode potential on the ion source ( pretty sure I have a patent on this somewhere)
You do not need 5kv it should work well with 500 to 1500 volts with normal spacings as seen in most fusors

John,

I am a slow thinker, it may well have been a seed planted all those years ago that suddenly started germinating in my brain ;)

Transil diodes as you suggest should do the job too, possibly better as they can handle more current, and 400V diodes means half as much soldering, I am all for that!

If our only purpose was electron suppression, then 500V would suffice, but we need it to also be a strong ion source so we need around 5-10 kV with at least 6-7 mA between the source and the drain to make ions.

as per my patent for the 360 degree internal / external pipe coater ion source 3kV of transil diodes to get the ion source to strike
