Demo Fusor Plasma

Post by Aidan Furlong »

The Demo Fusor Mk.1 first achieved plasma on 01/18/17 with a 12kV NST and an unrated vacuum pump (I got the wrong gauge so it perpetually reads -29inHg). This was built more of a proof of concept and to work with vacuum systems more before the jump up to a full metallic setup. Don't worry, it's grounded, the wire is just hard to see.

Different grid types have been switched in and out to see the different effects of different gauges and geometries.

Some of the inner grids have been giving some trouble, making plasma dance along the wire and coronas to form, spot-heating either the epoxy or flange. I believe this is due to the double-plate method for the outer grid. One other theory that's been considered is that parts of the grid aren't conducting voltage well due to either contaminants or some sort of wear down.
