Archived - 2012 HEAS EVENT & Photos

Post by Frank Sanns » Sat Oct 06, 2012 3:43 am

The 2012 HEAS is well underway today. Many familiar faces and some new ones. The first photo is the first evening dinner with about half of the members present.

The evening was complete with a demonstration of Richard's fusor, metals activation, along with a Van DeGraff generator, cloud chamber, led technology demos. Tomorrow is the big day with a group breakfast, one of a kind flea market, diverse demos, presentations, dinner, and great discussions and socializing well into the night.

NOTE EDIT: click on all images in all reply postings to enlarge and view R.H.

3. Swap meet view 2
4. 1500cpm whale bone (L), and historic graphite block from CP-2 reactor (R) - thanks Carl!
5. Big glass! CX1125 (L) and 750XL with U-Glass joints (R) - thanks Rich!
6. 750-800kv Van de Graff generator (my demo)
7. Moi on the Van de Graff before Carl discharged me
8. Larry's super discharge device

Thanks to everyone who attended this year's big event I have the usual major image of all the fusor.net folks who attended this year's conference. (attached)

The usual special appreciation goes to all who have contributed photos. I am just too busy to roam about and capture all the scene. You guys help me mightily when you pile on the images of the event.

I hope that this is Fusor IV's last year and that a fusor V can be on hand next year. We did get fusor IV up to a total of ~1,485,000 n/s or 2.8 million fusions/second.
Tim Koeth's REM Ball showed ~9 mRem/hr at the fusor chamber of fast neutrons.
Best run data: 15.8 micorns of D2, 45.1kv @ 9.5ma.

We had a total of 61 people attend of which 55 formally registered. This makes this year one of the largest in the 23 years I have held this sort of gathering. 19 of the attendees were fusor.net folks bringing the fusor related attendances to ~33%! Our farthest travelers would be Ed Miller and Jon Rosentsiel (California) with Carl Willis probably third. Albuquerque, NM.

Thanks, again, to all who helped make this a really big event.

Richard, thanks again for hosting yet another great H.E.A.S. meet, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Richard,

Wish I could have been there, looks a lot of fun...

Just a double check on that rem ball measurement, 9 mrem, looks low for 1.4 mega neuts at chamber wall. If I assume 15 cm, radius, the exposure per hour should be around 36 mrem/h

The original calibration of my system was done with a total of 4 different bubble detectors over a total of 62 timed runs over a period of 5 years with the detector fixed and data reduced to an average multiplier coefficient for the counts on the fixed He3 detector. The detector has never been moved or altered in any way since 2004. I have given an extensive treatment here and in my lab notes for this method over the years on how this was done.

Jon Rosenstiel brought some figures from his plus-ultra system as a check on this and my system mimes his very closely in neutron numbers at a given pressure, voltage and current.

The activation of silver would also back this up.

All work and statements are probably within 15-20% which is about the best any one can do on absolute neutron numbers.

In short, I am relatively confident of my numbers as the data collected over the last 8 years is rather voluminous and cross checked by others and using many different methods.

I do not know the history or calibration of the rem ball used here as it was not my instrument.
