Dead Ionization Gauges Wanted

Post by ian_krase » Fri Aug 04, 2017 8:29 am

I'm looking to pick up dead ionization gauges for cheap -- specifically, burned out iridium filament ones.

(Yes, I am after the filaments -- I think I just might be able to transplant them to my Varian mass spec ion source.

Ian
tungsten wire is supplied in small amounts by

Iridum not, as far as I know.

Resistance welding is ok. In order to avoid oxidation I place a drop of isopropilic alcohol before welding.

As a matter of fact, these guys refurbish MS burned filaments.

They have Ir, though not pre-coated.

The filaments from ion gauge tubes are way too heavy for a mass spec. The filaments in mass specs are tiny, I think the ones in mine are around .003" in diameter. Try and use one out of an ion gauge and one of two things will happen, you will overload the filament drive or the filament drive will go into current limit and the filament will never get hot enough to be useful.

Keep an eye out on ebay and you can find replacement filament assemblies from time to time.

Can't overload the filament drive if I build my own that's capable of providing plenty of power.

(I got this thing for 5 bucks, it's just the ion gun with nothing else)
