HV Cable for Spellman DXM30N600X4215 30kV 20mA

Post by Samuel Low » Thu Jan 18, 2018 3:33 am

I've recently purchased a Spellman DXM30N600X4215 30kV 20mA power supply, but it didn't come with the output power cable! I was hoping if anyone here has one to sell, I would love to buy it from you. I've been searching everywhere on eBay without any luck, and the original Spellman people are selling me the cable for 500USD including shipping - that's a bit overkill for a power cable and I can't afford it. Please let me know if anyone has one! I don't even know what it's supposed to look like unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure you're going to be getting out the machine tools here.

I don't have one, but I think this looks like the same connector in another Spellman supply that had much discussion a couple months back.

You might want to read through the many posts in this thread:
"Spellman DXM70N600X3547 power supplies on ebay -70kV 8.56MA"
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11146&hilit=Spellman#p73469

Pretty sure a lot of that discussion was about making or finding a cable for those. I don't recall a happy solution.

Maybe others with direct experience will comment.

The connector in the previous thread was a Claymount CA-11 mini. Your connector looks more like a Federal Standard x-ray connector. Measure the id to be sure. Cables with these connectors come available occasionally on eBay, but even there they are often expensive. Check with your local x-ray company. They often have junked cables and might give you one. They usually have a connector on both ends, so you can cut off the good end. If you’re lucky, the damage that caused the cable to be replaced is in the middle and you can get two useable cables from one. I got a cable this way. Worst case you can improvise a connector if you have access to machine tools.

Thanks for all the replies! I don't think I have the proper machining tools to make the cables and even so I wouldn't know where the 4 pins go in those 4-pin slots... The Spellman guys are charging me 500 USD for that cable plus shipping (shipping alone cost like 300 USD) that's crazy, so I'm better off getting a whole new supply set if I can't find that cable... sigh.

If your connector is the CA-11, the previous thread referenced above said you could buy a connector and cable from Claymount for $60. Andrew Seltzman posted picture of a connector he made. Andrew now has a web page where he sells ion sources. He might sell you one of his connectors - worth asking.

Thank you Dan! I will contact Andrew Seltzman to ask about the cable! And I am also looking through Claymount's catalogue too, thanks!!! I really needed this.

I did not get any joy attempting to spend some money on a connector cable assembly from those guys. Hopefully you have better luck than me.
My plan is to make the connector using the info from Andrew.
I am also toying with 3D printing the HV connector rather than machining, it oddly seems like a good match. PLA is a reasonable dielectric provided it does not melt, and should it degrade over time I suppose I would just print a replacement.
Just food for thought
