Don't know if this has already been recommended, I found this video series very informative. This guy shows how to fabricate and build prototype parts for lab equipment and provides things to look out for when creating stuff. He has an enormous amount of equipment in his machine shop, but he explains why he is doing stuff and usually what's the best method from his experience. Sometimes I wonder at the safety regarding some of his stuff, but with anything, you have to keep your wits about you and be careful when working with machinery.
