Came across some good books.
Why Smash Atoms ? By Arthur K. Solomon Harvard University Press 1940
Found at a used book store for $ 15 very well written for the layperson or engineer. Chapters start from "what is an atom ?
Cockcroft / Walton generator, Van De Graff generator,cloud chamber,Cyclotron, Linear Accelerator and Geiger Counter.
Great Photos and diagrams. wonderful old text.

The Particle Odyssey : A journey to the Heart of Matter
Frank Close,Michael Marten and Christine Sutton + 240 pages
Oxford University Press 2002 List $ 45 bought on Amazon .com for $ 31 This is an updated version of the Particle Explosion published 15 years ago. The first book list for $ 10 on
Amazon.Com The Particle Odyssey has more than 300 illustrations most in color. If you love pictures as much as I do this book will blow you away. Chapters deal with paticle accelerators and detection tech. Cyclotrons,synchrocyclotrons, Cosmotrons and Tevatrons. Hand made accelerators from the 30's to modern day underground types. Great book recommend highly. American Scientist Mar-April 2003 has a review .
