Neutrons equilibriate to the temperature of the moderator, 'thermal' neutrons are at equilibrium at room temperature, if you want colder neutrons you need a colder moderator. I find it amazing you can cool a neutron to the extent you can keep it in a coffie cup (until it decays), it doesnt have the thermal energy to escape!

Is a coffee cup full of Neutrons - Dark Matter - or just cold coffee?

Cool stuff indeed!

This past summer Carl worked at that facility and I had a chance to get a tour. Incredible the science that is going on there.

If your coffee cup were full of neutrons, you would not see them. Without an electric field around them, they would not interact with light. Just don't take a sip or you will activate yourself like G0!.

We have to stop looking at the world through our physical eyes. The universe is NOT what we see. It is the quantum world that is real. The rest is just an electron illusion. ---FS
