Career status: Mechanical Engineering student @ Queens University Belfast (lo John Hendron - small world eh!)
I find the area of alternative energy production research EXTREMLY interesting. Not merely due to the socio/economic implications for mankind in the immediate future (next 50yrs or so) but also from an engineering point of view.
I'm currently on a year industrial placement in England and have a year left to complete my Degree.
I wonder what the response would be from my lecturors if I told them I was going to build a desktop Fusion device for my final year project =)
An absolutly fantastic forum! I dabble in website construction/computer programming as a side hobby.....have you considered changing over the forum to an Ultimate Bullitin Board? Maybe s'thing to consider as the group grows.

The newbie section is under way.
Read this and the old board with a fine tooth comb.
This group has covered a lot of ground.
Start with the "songs" board.
Then the Intranet board.
Then start on the present board.
A lot of stuff will be covered all very good but
If you are serious about this fusor it will take a year and a half to get a handle on it.
This is a multidisciplinary project.
We have people from all walks of life doing this.
Start with the Tom Ligon Analog article.
I know all about professors and Ivy league mentality.

Most of the so called college educated people can't seperate fusion from fission. I stopped trying to educate the non specialist. I had to shield my work from the prying eyes of jocks and faculty dependant kids at school. Even the Artificial Intelligence Geeks I worked beside lacked the ED to follow along. Physics instructors thought all fusion advances came out of a box labelled DOE ect.
