another better fusion story

Post by Rex Allers »

I'm not an advocate or supporter but just passing the story I encountered as
THIS will make fusion work...
https://futurism.com/calculations-fusion-energy-reality

Posting in chat because it seems to be YAFIT -- Yet Another Fusion Innovation Theory

Somebody'll make it work soon, right?

Interesting post - of course, big sounding laser energy that is applied for extremely short time periods doesn't really offer much net fusion energy. As for any 'runaway' effect, that they have to prove (and certainly that is a VERY big claim. Hence, without solid experiment proof, like all such claims - empty.) Also, asymmetric illumination tends to create killer instabilities so without uniform direct drive, they are ignoring the current biggest issue with inertial fusion approaches using the configuration in the post.

Also, calculations/models that ignore drive instabilities always give huge net fusion power outputs but as NIF discovered, (and they missed by five orders of magnitude) those aspects of inertial fusion are the issues confronting that approach.

Its seems all of the current spate of hopefuls are back to "real soon now".

Always lots o' ideas, but no doing. When the doing is rarely done is was hyper expensive took a long time and failed to produce net power for any period worth writing home to mom about the effort or its results.

P+B11 has been the ideal for over 40 years now. It rears is hopeful head over and over again. It should tell someone that if the easiest fusion D+T can't be done, why go after the third easiest fusion? The real draw is no neutrons....In theory. We all know there will be side neutron reactions at full energy levels.

I have always believed fusion is the energy of the future

And.....

Of course, it always will be.

Fusion is the energy of the future....and it always will be
The more complex the idea put forward by the poor amateur, the more likely it will never see embodiment
