viewing port material?

Post by solfinn kolle »

I have seen people say you should never use glass or plastic in a fuser. What is the viewing port supposed to be made of?

Usually glass. A small viewport is much less objectionable than a big glass bell jar.

Also you can put a small expendable glass window inside a glass viewport, or protect it with a grounded metal mesh.

You can buy glass viewports professionally made with the glass welded to the metal "frame" - these are somewhat expensive but can be found readily on eBay.

Solfinn,

You posted in the appropriate forum section. That's good. Since we seem to be having a burst of new members I thought I would add this...

It would be good if you learn how to mine the existing forum to find general information and then post any more specific questions in New User Chat.

The various FAQ sections are the best place to start. For general overview material I suggest to start by finding and reading the topic names that begin with a number (#1, #2, ...)

You asked about glass and plastic.

In: FAQs: Fusor Construction & Operation
I used the box 'Search in this forum...' for "glass"
Many hits, but these seemed a pretty good sample...

Since demo fusors often use glass enclosures,
I searched for "demo fusor"

the demo fusor is well described here,
materials are mentioned...

searched for "plastic"
In: FAQs: Fusor Construction & Operation
Surprisingly, didn't find too much discussion about plastic materials.

so put "plastic' in the main forum search window.

this hit looks pretty good...

That link points to one post that talks about plastic. Reading the whole thread has lots of good info too.

Hope some of that helps.

Rex, Thanks for all the work and taking your time to help this newbie out. I hope it is appreciated. I hope, even more, that other newbies will take the search hint and FAQ recommendation seriously.
