Some Simple Data Loggers

Post by Rich Feldman »

For a few weeks I have been getting to know several single-channel, stand-alone, pocket size data loggers with the Lascar brand. Handy little gadgets. Set-up and data retrieval employ a USB connector under a weather-resistant cap. Recording intervals can generally be set between 1 second and 1 hour. The free EasyLog software was downloaded, installed, and used without a hitch.

EL-USB-1 records its own temperature, with resolution of 1 °F or 1 °C. Here (concurrently) in house, garage, a usually-shady place on patio, and in fabric-covered shed.

Got these on ebay for $25 each -- new, but without package or battery!

EL-USB-3 records DC voltage between 0 and 30 V, with resolution of 0.05 V. Here on the battery bus of a rarely-used car with an unknown stray load, occasional brief engine runs, and occasional use of a cheap battery charger.

Its probe leads extend from the removable USB-connector cap. They connect to the instrument via USB, after a tiny adapter board. Probably easy to hack for other voltage ranges. Another standard logger, with fixed 4-to-20 mA range, looks about the same except for cap color.

EL-USB-CO records carbon monoxide concentrations with a fixed range of 0 to 1000 ppm. They have a user-configurable alarm beeper built into the connector cap. Test source here is a lawnmower running in a small greenhouse (don't get any bad ideas, please).

These came from same low-price ebay vendor. Interface software reports "Sensor expiration date 12/2015; are you sure you want to proceed?"

p.s. My last question about data loggers must have been under Trading Post, and is nowhere to be found today. Forums such as Power or Vacuum or Detection are too restrictive, hence the choice of this forum.
