Hi Geo,

If you have a positively-charged grid, you have to think about how hot it will get from electron bombardment. Just like a large vacuum tube may run with the plate red-hot, the electrons produced in the fusor discharge will cause a good more heating than ions. In this case the electrons would form near the grounded shell and would end up landing in the anode grid. This is not to say the concept wouldn't work or couldn't be made to work, it's just a caveat.
