Help with continuous fusor operation.

I built a fusor that is very similar to this design (http://youtu.be/9vERIyKwWvo) but I have have a problem. I hope someone can help me out!
When I power the fusor on it the purple light, plasma (whatever you want to call it) comes on for just 1-2 seconds and then disappears. In order to get another second of light I have to turn the Variac down to zero and back. The pipe connecting the fusor and the vacuum pump also lights up. Can someone tell me how to keep the light up and running for like a minute at least?
