Spot welding of any metal is only limited by your impulse energy. The fusor grid need not have any real structural strength, so a really crappy spot weld is just great. You could spot weld one inch tungsten bar stock just fine with enough energy.

Wire is especially easy. You should devise an impulse type welder with proper electrodes for good penetration, if serious about the welds.

It is only when structural strength is a critical issue that ultra complicated and special gas environments are used in the weld processes.
