I use 5 rings. 3 joined at the poles to form longitude lines and the final 2 in an equal "X" pattern over the first three. Tom Ligon prefers 6 rings. I have seen just three rings do OK, but never in a fusion machine.

I show how to make grids from scratch in a special segment on my second fusor video, (Doing fusion - tips and techniques), using both silver solder and spot welding techniques. You sort of rediscovered the classic jewelers wire loop process on your own. I show it also on the video. Using this technique, I can whip out 20 clossed wire loops with a spot welder in under 4 minutes.
