My wife once attended a class on mission statements (among other things) where the lecturer made the point that mission statements should be short and to the point... you should be able to write it on the back of a business card..
One of his examples, for a geophysics company: "Get up early. Find oil."
Not to say that you can't expand on this in more detail, but a short, succinct statement goes a long way towards clarifying what you're trying to achieve.
However, that said, I'm not sure that this consortium, bbs, conglomeration really can or should be that focussed...
Given the generally amateur (i.e. non big, highly funded lab) nature of what we've been talking about, perhaps a short statement would be something like:
The purpose of the XXX is to provide a common point to share information, opinions, and ideas about low cost (or other adjective here) fusion.
Continuing... To that end, we do A..... , we do B...., we do C.....
Much like the statement that was on the original fusor bbs, which I don't recall off hand, but it was only one paragraph.
