I've just discovered that the forum listings has and option (in the upper right) to "view by date" instead of thread. Clicking on that option will display all messages in the order they were posted - a much easier way to see what has been posted since your most recent visit than clicking through all the threads.
Try that, let me know if it improves your experience any.
