Unfortunately as long as the public is not freezing in the dark.. they won't care. But a few years of Bush's tender menstrations with large corporate interests over the public good.. this could change. I had an old associate downplay alternate energy and ask me why I was interested. Just remember it was the rocket and flugplatz who made rocketry work.. not PHDs, not the mainstream people but interested people who tried things and made it work. I liken the grid melting problem with what made rocketry hard in the 30's ,metals could not take the heat. Rocket liners would melt under the intense heat of liquid fuels. So the common academic wisdom of the thirties was it was impossible! Werner von Braun and his associates discovered gas cooling to protect the liner. ( The Leidenfrost effect). Technique,Technique,Technique... Here we are in the year two thousand the academic wisdom of this era is still the same... fusion has to big, ugly, costly,in big corporation or in government hands. The most important factor is the latter I suspect. What would the oil cartel do if people could do it themselves?
