This is one of the things I'm always wondering about, i.e. whether there might have been something to Tesla's power transmission ideas. It becomes pertinent when one contemplates fusion as a vast source of electrical power, and then you start wondering "how can we power vehicles with it?" so that all reliance on carbon-based fuels can be eliminated. I don't think we're ever going to see the "fusion powered automobile" but if we could transmit fusion generated electricity to a vehicle, well, that might provide an answer.
Of course, we might also cook the occupants en-route....
