Re: Bush touts Fusion
Index Previous in Thread Next in Thread

In reading the exerpt, I came to 2 conclusions:

1) Bush didn't write this, and probably didn't even read it. It is written by his advisory comittee.

2) It advocates "business as usual" as far as fusion research is concerned. even that is a stretch, as it basically says. 'yeah, we should research fusion."

The first conclusion is not necessarily a black mark on the President. I don't think either candidate knew jack about fusion, and I would prefer they leave policy to those who, in theory, know more about it.

The second conclusion is more relevant to the post. Bush (or the advisory panel) is not "touting fusion". They are barely admitting it exists. I don't know which one concerns me more.

Personally, I think that for the next 30 years, conventional power sources (coal, oil, fission, gas, hydro) are the best bet for powering the country. In particular, I would prefer to see fission become dominant. The US has enormous reserves of uranium, and fission plants can be cheap and safe. That would certainly help offset our oil dependence.
