I know what you mean about the serial com deal. The 8100 came with a tty port, but mine has the rs-232 option which is a bit more friendly, but not much. At 78 lbs the 8100 is indeed a piglet, but I don't have to worry about accidentally nudging it over the edge of the table brushing up against it. (of course, the table must has seen duty in an old viking mead hall - card tables are not an option.)
Don Orie at O.E. technologies and I have been chums for some years. I have recommended him in years past to those on this list looking for interesting and bizarre scientific related materials.
