5 mr/hr is fine! The amount I get out of the port on my machine near 30kv input is 1000 times that much now!!! (5R/hr). Any instrument that can detect down to even 20 mr/hr ought to be fine. A geiger counter will even work, but the best instrument is a ion chamber type.
