I just got a flyer from Advanced Photonix (http://www.advancedphotonix.com/) who make large area avalanche photo detectors. They claim that they can replace PMTs in a lot of applications. I've called them to find out about scintillator applications.
Of some additional interest is that the flyer has an offer:
"Then send us your old PMT and we'll send you an 3mm uncooled LAAPD...." expires 2 March.
No mention of whether the PMT has to be working, a limit on the number you can exchange, etc. I suspect a 3mm APD isn't going to do us much good, but, the offer is there.
Also, it might be an ad copy error, and while, as written, the offer is unrestricted, they'd have to honor it, I would think that the honorable thing to do is to go by the intent.
