Re[3]: solid state replacements for PMTs

Ad hype is rampant. Misrepresentation, obfuscation, and an occassional flat out lie are all part of the game to suck in the curious.

How many people would have responded to.......

"The all new solid state, slightly subequivalent, replacement to a low sensitivity PMT"

"Yes we we have them here now! A pretty close equivaltnet to a modest PMT with nearly the same overhead and at much greater cost."

When the engineers talk face-to-face, the marketing department hype sort of fades to the level of pure lies.

These devices probably do fill a niche in the gulf between over amplified, noisey, normal solid state detection devices and medium performance PMTs.

I'll bet the folks offering the tradein deal have a big pile of N.O.S RCA 931's on hand now!

I don't think EMI or Hamamatsu are quakin' in their booties over this "new thing".
