Thanks alot for the advice guys- at least now I have some idea of what I'm looking at!
Unfortunately I know VERY little about what kind of detector our unit uses- I found it in storage (at my university) with no documentation, or any other kind of indication of how it works. It's basically a featureless white cylinder with a big log-scale meter on one end, two battery compartments and a sensity selection switch. The bottom 3/4 of it seems to be a big block of polythene- moderator? As you may have guessed my knowledge of neutron detection technology is zero- but I'm willing to learn!
