You would be better off holding out for an "end on " tube for scintillation work, as the scintillator is much easier to couple to the photocathode than for a side-looking tube.. Somewhere around a 2" to 3" diameter would be ok. I would stay away from larger diameters, as you will have to shell out more bucks for the scintillator or need to use a lucite light pipe to take advantage of the extra cathode area.
