Would you even need to use actual electron guns? It seems as though it would be possible to use a setup similar to a 'standard' fusor - i.e. negative grids toward the center of the trap and positive grids toward the end. It wouldn't get rid of the inner grid, but might be interesting to try just the same.

If the device were shaped like a cylinder, maybe the inner grids could become simply a ring (or a pair of rings) placed along the chamber wall toward the center... The positive grids would be like end caps in this.

Any comments?
