The longitudal beam would enact as a force perpendicular to the direction of the duteron; assuming one could tune the beam to effect the ions. This would reduce efficiency. The lasers would also probably burn out, providing one succeded in precisely aligning them. For linear acceleration, I beieve the best approach would be a field reverse configuration.
