This was the problem all along with the linear acceleration and the very advantage of the fusor.
Overlooking scattering, neutral collisions, etc., all ions in the mix, within a fusor, are sort of doomed to head towards the central electrostatic focus region. Add to this, the energy boost with head-ons and near head-ons, it can be seen to reduce the required acceleratory voltage by a factor of 2-4 for a given fusion output. Thus we see the fusor's effective nature in doing amateur fusion rather cheaply.
