I've used a 2 l/s Varian pump on occasion as an appendage pump to maintain vacuum over a long period of time. Assuming it's in good condition the key is to keep it clean. Dry pump for roughing, a good bake at at least 250 C (w/o magnet of course) and metal seals.

My practical experience with unbaked ion pumped systems with anything other than a very small gas load is nil. Diff and turbo pumps are far more convenient and flexible.
