Re: Diffusion Pump questions

I don't know anything about the VBC pump (don't recognize the brand, either), but the CVC VMF-10 you have is potentially a real honey. It is a fractionating pump, which means it is designed to separate out the low boiling fractions of the pump oil and chuck them out the exhaust, esentially purifying your pump oil as it works. The pump also has built-in baffles, which should help reduce backstreaming. It takes a 55cc charge of oil.
I don't know anything about the oil you have, but I think you want to save your shekels for a high quality silicone or polyphenyl ether type oil. These types are much less susceptible to breakdown and oxidation, and will give you a much lower ultimate pressure than your more proletarian types of oil without having to use a cold trap at the inlet of your pump. DC-704 silicone oil(pretty good stuff) is $26/100cc from Duniway. DC-705, the better stuff, is $29/100cc. The polyphenyl ether oils are about 5 times as expensive. You can also get these oils, along with some comparative specs, from K.J. Lesker.
