Not sure if this is relevant, but there is a condition that occurs in very high current density cathodes called "bleaching".. in which the electrons are drawn away so rapidly as to deplete the region and shut down further cathode emission.

I think the cathode material was LaB6, used as a photo-cathode, at mega amperes /cm^2. As I recall, the cathode material stayed put.
