The average amateur would be hard pressed to really work a 1 meter diameter sphere. The final pressure really dictates size. Remember the mean free path of the deuterons at or about 1 micron is only about 4 inches! Therefore, 6-8 inches is about maximum size for a fusor unless you use ion guns and or a dispenser cathode and pump to 10-5 or 10-6 torr. Which would really increase the cost a lot.

The increased surface area of a 1 meter sphere would harbor and hold a lot of sorbed gases and water vapor with bakeout being the norm after every exursion back up to air.
