I don't have have a lot of experience in this area, but has anyone considered a high pressure ionization chamber as a proportional detector for charged particles? Construction of such a beast might be within the means of the determined amateur. One problem would be devising a window for the vacuum to chamber interface, and another would be the problem of detecting low amplitude current pulses with sufficient speed and S/N ratio (similar to BF3). Xenon at a few atmospheres might do the trick....
