You will have to notch them in someway for assembly and brazing should work just fine here.
The 3" diameter is a bit large, but that sized grid might fly in an 8" fusor. I try to hold to a 4 or 5 to 1 geometry, but others work fine too. Like Tom Ligon says, "the envelope is just not that well investigated for these things".
Scrounging is an art form and extremely self-satisfying. It can often mean almost no money out of pocket, but a lot of labor of love to make work. In a few lucky moments, you might find just the thing which will remove most of the labor and be free to boot.
