What about an ion pump? Clean, oilless, etc. I haven't actually opened one up, but rebuilding it shouldn't be all that hard for one skilled in the usual tinkering skills. At least it pumps H2, unlike a cryopump.

The other idea suggested to me was a dual sorption pump: while one is cooling and sorbing, the other is baking out to the roughing pump.
