Which helps on the vacuum requirement as well, I presume. Usually, in ion optics type applications, you want to pull enough vacuum to keep the mean free path much longer than your particle path. A whole lot easier for 10 cm than 330 cm, I should think.... (esp if you consider the outgassing from the wall of that 3.3 m sphere)
