I was reading earlier today from another site, apparently college students attempting to make their own scintillator material from "exceptionally transparent" polystyrene mixed (apparently stirred into molten poly) with "photon emitting" material (they declined to specify what). They did give the source of the polystyrene as either Dow or Dupont, I don't remember which and also a product number. It was interesting reading and very informative. There was also some mention of PMT's, their working and comparisons of diffrent kinds, seems the Hamamatsu is primo.
