Stopping radiation

It may be difficult to separate "theory" from "application," but let''s see if this helps facilitate the discussion.

Stopping radiation

Post by Anson Tsang »

Since fusors that uses deuterium gas gives our fast neutrons that are dangerous to human body, is it possible to surround the chamber with water, and then add a water cooler, then finally compete the outer layer with lead glass? I read online saying that the best way to slow a neutron is by using hydrogen based materials.

'Distance' is the cheapest barrier, and a couple of metres worth is largely all you will need at the output rate of a typical fusor. The x-rays are far more significant, if you want to worry about something, but even those are of manageable concern providing you don't go much above 30kV and that you have a metal chamber with no ports that could otherwise illuminate the space you are in.

From about 25kV up, then best you start thinking about the implications of x-rays much more seriously.

Yes, x rays are far more dangerous 25kv up, and thats why i am planning to use leaded glass.

I haven't read up much on X-rays and the likes of it but I'm pretty sure there won't be much X-rays if you operate the fusor in short intervals while standing far away. If you want to view the inside of the fusor though, [assuming you are using a SS sphere] you could attach a camera connected to the inside of the fusor or behind a thin plastic window with a paraffin ''container'' around the fusor and a paraffin hatch so you can access the camera. On the subject of paraffin, you could use it as a cheaper and more easily accessible material as paraffin also has hydrogen in it, although the wall will have to be thicker and can be easily damaged. Sorry if this turns out to be badly worded as the server stopped responding suddenly and the original reply died with it.

Also, you might find this FAQ interesting, if you haven't already read this yourself.
