New Improved Fusor Cabinet

Post by Mark Rowley »

Thinking about discarding the rolling “fusor cart” arrangement as internal working space is limited and the metal frame is an annoyance when pushing between 50-70kV.

No plans on spending a ton of bucks to do this and it won’t look like something from a well funded research lab. But it will be practical, affordable, and visually more appealing.

Main focal points will be:
Improved HV routing
Increased X-ray shielding of the HV insulator area
Moderator design that will allow for easy access of activation samples.
Improved overall aesthetics

I’ll update this post as I make make progress.

Build it out of slotted angle.
The more reactive the materials, the more spectacular the failures.
The testing isn't over until the prototype is destroyed.

That defeats the requirement to minimize the use of metal framing.....plus $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The best thing about building a fusor and then another or another iteration of the same one, is the opportunity to see the many faults or short comings of the preceding design. All next tries, and "taking another whack at it", will produce something of learned reflection. Their always exists another way...A better way.

Nice to see the forward look to better things, including aesthetics.

Fusion is the energy of the future....and it always will be
The more complex the idea put forward by the poor amateur, the more likely it will never see embodiment

Yes, if out of metal, you have to allow for clearances, but I don't know of any true HV non-conductors that are mechanically strong that are not real expensive.
The more reactive the materials, the more spectacular the failures.
