Practical substitutes (although not quite as good) for silicone putty, are "silly putty", and kid's modelling clay - the oil based type, not the water based!! The modelling clay is quite good, if you take the trouble to get the air excluded as has already been mentioned on this thread. It isn't too flexible, and you need to be sure it attaches firmly. But it does work well at supressing corona, comes in pretty colors and the price is right too.

I dont remember if it was mentioned earlier, but you can also buy Silicone rubber, HV insulating tape which is self fusing. A wad or better yet, a few layers wrap of this around a connection works quite well.
