The best, fastest and most valuable learning occurs in crash projects which are often self funded, in which failure is not an option. No one wants to see his or her personal bucks circling the bowl, so they knucle down and steel themselves to the task. Whatever it takes.

I think that fusion would be farther along if individuals of divine inspriation (fire in th' belly) could have self funded their ideas free of scientopolitical pressures of acedemia or military priorities.
