Re[5]: What do mechanical pump sounds mean?

With respect to setting the clearence between the rotor and the rotor housing.

Chuck, the guy in St.Paul who rebuilds vacuum pumps, told me that the rotor clearence in the secondary radius is 0.0005", but he refused to tell me how it is set. Is there enough play in the rotor housing bolts to allow any adjustment? How can one use a guage in that space? You have to take the rotor housing apart to get the guage out, then you loose the clearence setting.

The only thing I can think of, is to use some "disposable" guage material such as a strip of Handi Wrap plastic film to establish the rotor clearence, and let it be groung up and out with the first oil change. Does any one know?
