I would think that the problem is not
winding your own transformer, but rather
rectifing the high voltage.What you would
trade off is size, you would have a large
power supply unit.

The english
electronics magizine "wireless world?"
does often unsual projects.

How much current is needed for
your design, because would not electro-static
generation of high voltage be a better idea.
